Critters that matter for your garden
Presenter, Nuala Madigan, is the Environmental Education Officer with Irish Peatland Conservation Council. Nuala is passionate about the environment and is constantly in demand offering a range of programmes of study to help students at primary and post primary level to explore and learn about wildlife. Nuala combines fun and active learning in all her presentations.
We do not appreciate the role insects play in the food web. Insects help break down and dispose of wastes, dead animals and plants. Without them our environment would be very messy indeed. They are also the sole food source for many amphibians, birds and mammals.
Safe hideaways can be hard for wildlife to find in some gardens. Building ‘bug hotels’ has become a popular practice in recent years. Most consist of several different sections that provide insects with nesting facilities. There is a ‘bug hotel’ already in the grounds of Solas Bhride but it is badly in need of repair. With the help of the Men’s Shed and under the supervision of Nuala we hope to officially open the renovated ‘hotel’ as part of the afternoon’s input.
