Edel Bhreathnach is a medieval historian with a particular interest in interdisciplinary studies that connect archaeology, history and literature. She was CEO of The Discovery Programme: Centre for Archaeology and Innovation Ireland (2013-2019) and is a former Visiting Fellow to All Souls College Oxford (2016). She has worked on large-scale projects relating to Tara, Co. Meath, on the history of the Franciscans in Ireland, and on monasticism in Ireland from the tenth to the thirteenth century. She has published widely on these subjects including her volume Ireland in the medieval world 400-1000AD: landscape, kingship and religion (2019). She co-edited Monastic Europe: communities, landscapes and settlements (2019). Her volume Monasticism in Ireland, AD900-1250 is currently in press.

Musical Concert of Celebration
For St. Brigid’s Day 2021 the Department of Foreign Affairs, in conjunction with the Irish Traditional Music Archive, commissioned performers to create new compositions in the traditional idiom. Two of the performers who created unique pieces will perform in this afternoon’s concert.
Caitlín Nic Gabhann, dancer and concertina player, has a slip jig dance dedicated to St. Brigid’s Day, along with original music
Sile Denvir, singer and harpist, composed a song in Irish called Seo í isteach mo Bhrídeog. Recently, she was honoured with the title Amhránaí na Bliana (Singer of the Year) at the prestigious TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards.
